Starting a Business and Building Your Brand

Written by Bryan Moore

The three aspects of a business that impact consumers, and targeted audiences alike, are your brand, the web, and print marketing. This is what draws people in and makes a business significant among competitors. This is also where the focus of a business should be once the infrastructure is in place and nailed down.

Building a strong brand means having a product or service that impacts society and is a cohesive single unit. The targeted audience must be able to relate to the marketing and understand its meaning without getting caught up in the details. Create a brand identity that is themed tightly and is appealing and you are well on your way.

It must be distinguished how these products and services are relevant and what makes them different among their peers. To compete there must be a competitive edge. It’s a simple equation. There are many companies and small businesses out there that have several different marketing pieces, ads, and slogans and it becomes confusing. The message must be simple so there is an instant connection.

It’s not uncommon for small start-up businesses to try and do things on their own. They will design their own logo and marketing materials and some may even try to create a website. We’ve all seen some hideous outcomes from this. This only hurts a business that is trying to grow. Finding a designer to put together a professional brand costs money but you have to spend money to make money.

In order to succeed you have to get the word out. However you decide to go about this will impact your future. A business that is starting out not only needs to provide a product or service that is significant but it also needs to radiate professionalism and quality. Over half of businesses fail in their first year according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. Reasons for this are location, money, experience, inventory management, competition, poor sales, and poor marketing. Most of this can be controlled by proper branding, captivating appeal, and making correct decisions.

If you are planning to start a business, focus on two things – infrastructure (the inside) and marketing (the outside). These two elements will make or break you. If you run your operation correctly and market yourself with quality and professionalism you will increase your chances of succeeding.

Always look for ways to save money. For the "inside", keep track of ALL your records, start small, and stay out of credit trouble. For the "outside", create a captivating campaign, appeal to your audience, and consider creative help through an experienced freelance designer as opposed to an expensive design firm or taking things on yourself.
